Course Description

Through this Local Engagement course, Juniata students will partner with the Huntingdon Area School District to offer language and culture classes to elementary and middle school students. They will design and deliver course content in a dynamic, fun, after-school program designed to introduce students in grades 3-6 to Spanish and the cultures of Spain and Latin America. The course introduces students to best practices in local engagement and engages students in the study and implementation of best practices in language education. During seven weeks of the class, Juniata students will teach the twice-a-week lessons via an online platform and will develop, assign and assess exercises on Google Classroom. Pre-reqs: A minimum of Spanish 230 and safety clearances.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Spanish 120 is the second part of a three-semester introductory Spanish sequence. The primary goals of this course are to enable students to continue building their proficiency in Spanish and to attain a broader understanding of Hispanic/Latin cultures. In SP 120, students continue to develop their communicative and cultural competence.They begin to show a greater level of accuracy when using basic language structures, and they are exposed to more complex features of the target language. They continue to focus on communicating about their immediate world and daily activities. They read material on familiar topics and write short, directed compositions. Emphasis continues to be placed on the use of the target language in the classroom as exclusively as possible, as well as on the use of culturally authentic materials to learn about the target language and culture(s). There is continued emphasis on using the language in the real world beyond the classroom setting. One way this can be accomplished is through the integration of technology in the classroom, as technology is a means to access authentic information in the target language and to offer students the chance to interact with other speakers.

-articulate and contrast the values, beliefs, or practices of different cultures
-describe global challenges and the ways different cultures address them
-communicate about their immediate world and daily activities
-practice a greater level of accuracy when using basic language structures
-interact orally and in writing with other speakers, understand oral and written messages, and make oral and written
presentations, all in the target language
