This is a course for students who are interested in further developing their Spanish for practice in a health care setting. In the course, students will learn colloquial and formal medical vocabulary. They will review intermediate-level grammatical structures and practice how to properly apply these in a health care setting.  Videos and interviews with Spanish speakers, a Mexican telenovela, and simulated medical situations are just some of the materials used in this three-week, intensive online course. Students entering the course should have intermediate level Spanish. It is recommended that they have completed two 200-level courses. 


Materials needed:

1)    Netflix access (or a DVD copy of the first 8 episodes of La hipocondríaca)

2)  A Google+ account linked to Español para los profesionales de salud: Juniata18

3)  Access to our course Moodle site with course PDFs

4)  Reliable high-speed internet access to post and watch videos and connect via Adobe Connect & Skype


Course objectives:

-To gain better understanding of health-related cultural practices among Latinos and best practices for health care professionals who work with Latinos

-To learn essential colloquial and formal vocabulary necessary for a health care provider

-To review and show command of intermediate-level grammatical structures and to understand how to properly apply these in a health care setting

-To improve upon the conversational skills needed to engage with Spanish-speaking patients

-To use fluent and grammatically appropriate Spanish to attain health history and assessment information, give patients information about their condition, and for treatment and patient education.
