Many of us have a depiction of “home” that is rooted largely in our cultural background and personal experiences. While we will reflect on our own representation and sense of home in this class, we will also aim to broaden our understanding of people’s many different experiences of home, including what it means to be far from home or without a home. In this course, students will critically explore what the notion of “home” means to different people through time and across cultures, with a focus on moments of leaving home, moments of returning home, or moments of finding a new home whether by necessity or choice. This First-Year Seminar course will guide students through structured self-reflections, in-class discussions and exercises to understand the significance of “home” and to define our sense of belonging.
