This is a course for students who are interested in further developing their Spanish for practice in a healthcare setting. In the course, students will learn colloquial and formal medical vocabulary, including symptoms, the body, and medical conditions, and will discuss and write essays on best practices, equity in access, and historic and contemporary challenges in the field.. They will develop projects based on authentic material and will review intermediate-level grammatical structures, practicing how to properly apply these in a healthcare setting and use communicative tasks to engage with spoken and written texts, developing linguistic and intercultural skills. Videos and interviews with Spanish speakers from Guatemala, the D.R., and from the healthcare profession, simulated medical situations, medical programs, and authentic testimonials are just some of the materials used in this intensive online course. Students entering the course should have intermediate level Spanish. It is recommended that they have completed two previous 200-level Spanish courses.
