In this Topics in International Politics course we examine nationalism as a theoretical concept as well as examine some specific empirical case studies of nationalism in contemporary world politics. We consider, among others, the following questions: What is a nation? Are nations modern or ancient concepts? How and why have nations been "constructed" (or imagined) over the past 200 years? Is nationalism an inevitable aspect of world politics, or is there hope that humanity can construct a universal identity? Should we aspire to "overcome" national identities? Is nationalism an inherently detrimental political force?
