A special topic chemistry course teaching about the chemistry of molecular assemblies and intermolecular bonds. It is one of today's fastest growing disciplines, crossing a range of subjects from biological chemistry to materials science; and from synthesis to spectroscopy. A selection of the topics covered includes host-guest chemistry; clathrates; self-assembly; molecular devices; dendrimers; supramolecular polymers; and metal-organic frameworks. The laboratory will introduce students to practical syntheses designed to prepare archetypal compounds used in supramolecular chemistry - crown ethers, podands, resorcinarenes, and calixarenes. Techniques commonly used in the prediction and analysis of supramolecular phenomena will also be discussed. Pre-Req: CH-222 or CH-232.
