The course examines selected major themes and writers in the philosophy of law. Starting with classical natural law theory, we will proceed to the common law and its development of a distinctive method of legal reasoning. We will then consider the positivist challenge to the assumptions of the common law, and conclude with a discussion of prominent contemporary legal theorists.
