Welcome to Expedition: Earth! This year’s destination is Hawai’i (the big island). This semester, we will investigate the geologic processes that formed this beautiful island and continue to shape it. Topics include plate tectonics, igneous rocks, basaltic volcanism, glaciers, beach processes, oceanography, and reef ecology.

The overall goal of this course is to provide a holistic, systems-level approach to understanding geologic processes in a region different from central Pennsylvania. In order to become well-trained, rounded geologists, students must experience geologic phenomena beyond those found in the local area.
