Are we alone in the universe? If earth became uninhabitable, where would we go? Scientists and dreamers have looked to Mars to answer these questions and more. In the Mars first year seminar we will explore the wealth of scientific data, major works of fiction, historical interpretations, and modern plans to visit the red planet to better understand our culture's fascination with Mars. Why is it so hard to recognize if life was ever present on Mars? What about this planet has sustained our collective curiosity? Is it possible to colonize Mars this century, why would we want to, and do we have the right?
