"Democracy Under the Microscope" In this section of First-Year Composition, we closely examine the concept and application of democracy in the United States and around the world. What is democracy? What are its benefits and its flaws? How well is democracy working? Does the resurgence of authoritarianism near and far suggest that democracy is in decline? Winston Churchill famously said, "No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried." In this course, we put democracy under the microscope and consider the wisdom of Churchill's observation.
