In the past fifty years, Yoga has become one of India's best-known exports, primarily in the form of physical (Hatha) Yoga. Through a concentrated study of asana, meditation techniques, pranayama, philosophical texts, and scientific reasoning, students will engage with the system of yoga through questioning and analysis as we explore how yoga and meditation became popular in the West. Students are expected to be in their third or fourth year when taking a Connections course.

Welcome! In this FYC section, we will focus on fairy tales from all over the world and various cultures while developing our writing, communication, and critical thinking skills. Fairy tales are literally everywhere we look. They appear in television adverts, games, shows, young adult literature, and other forms of media consumption. But is there an original tale? Where do tales come from? We will begin the semester with an introduction to fairy tales and then shift to analyzing different tales that are considered the same tale type. The course will also look at the historical and cultural context of these tales before examining the meanings and representations found within their wondrous pages. We will end the course discussing adaptations in modern media and how this alters the tales.

First Year Foundations is a one-credit course in each of the first two semesters (totaling two credits). These courses provide students with the resources, skills, and information that will assist them in mastery of academic and social life at Juniata College. Along with acquisition of skills and knowledge, students will reflect on their journey at the start of their Juniata experience, helping to set the path for the rest of their academic career. Students will add reflective pieces to their portfolio to document their academic progress at Juniata College. Through thoughtful reflection of the Principles of the Liberal Arts Lifestyle, the Attributes of a Juniata Graduate, and the College’s Mission Statement, students will engage with their classmates as they lay the foundations of success. The courses will connect students with a wide variety of campus resources.
First Year Foundations 1: In the first semester, students will “think about who you are.” What does it mean for students to be in college, at this place, at this time? What are their goals for the future? Students work to develop skills necessary for lifelong learning.

The overall goal of this course is to provide a holistic, systems-level approach to understanding geologic processes in a region different from central Pennsylvania. In order to become well-trained, rounded geologists, students must experience geologic phenomena beyond those found in the local area.
